Cake Tasting & Ring Shopping.

We started our productive wedding weekend with cake tasting, visiting Porto's in Glendale and Cakeland in Downey. Porto's had some delicious cake, but we left more in love with their potato balls and tamales than their buttercream and raspberry. Cakeland, on the other hand, was great. Owned by Hector Navarro who has 22 years experience baking cakes, the small, cramped bakery is a gem. We tasted a bunch of samples and they were all great. What made the choice easy, though, was Hector. He was extremely friendly and took the time to sit with us and talk about each cake. Personal service really counts for something!

We're going with a three-tier cake and each tier will be a different flavor. We've decided on white cake with strawberry, bavarian cake with raspberry and chocolate cake with chocolate fudge (a Chelsee must have!).

We also went ring shopping today and found our wedding bands. We started in San Gabriel, trying our hand with bargain shopping at the Chinese jewelry stores (though can you really call them stores?). It seemed promising--the prices were cheap and the rings looked authentic enough. Then, at one jewelry stand, we asked the sales person for a specific ring. He proceeded to dig through a shoebox full of loose diamond rings to pull out a few matches. We politely walked away and drove to Brentwood.

Cabochon was where we ended up. Situated on Montana Ave., it's a nice boutique jewelry store. Richard picked out a shiny gold ring and Chelsee found one with small diamonds all the way around that matched her engagement ring.

It was a great weekend. Now if only the weather was better!
